In 2021, that term is divided and argued about as often as fashion itself. Sensitive subjects surrounding 'streetwear,' such as gentrification, white-washing, plagiarism, and what is 'urban?' are valid and vital conversations. We must recognise the connection between fashions throughout the times and the historical and cultural context.
However, leaving debates aside, streetwear is commonly defined as a casual style of dressing popular among youths. This fashion sub-culture derives influence from hip-hop and skater style. Although streetwear rose from these humble beginnings, it is now a multi-billion dollar industry and has a major impact on the fashion world and its trends.
Even popular brands that are famous for their haute couture and tailored pieces are getting in on the streetwear trend. Similarly, streetwear designers are also gaining respect in the high fashion industry. Vigil Abloh, founder of the streetwear brand Off-White today holds the position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton Mens. Needless to say, streetwear currently has a stronghold on the fashion industry and there is no sign of slowing.
Some of the best art forms in the world originated from marginalised communities, and fashion is certainly no different. Streetwear can trace its origin all the way back to the 70s’ and 80s’ New York hip-hop scene and Californian skater and surfer scenes. But it wasn’t until Stussy opened his business that streetwear really started becoming the fashion movement that it is today.
In the 1980s, surfboard designer Shawn Stussy began selling printed T-shirts from his car. These t-shirts featured custom designs that he used on his surfboards. As his designs gained popularity, he eventually moved on to boutiques. However, his sales continued peaking. So, Stussy did the one thing he could do: create exclusive sales. This, in turn, created product scarcity in the market and increased the appeal of his t-shirts even more. This trend has continued till today and exclusivity is still the common element that ties all the streetwear brands together.
Streetwear has moved on from being a specific sub-culture’s style and become mainstream in the past few years. We can even see its influence in top designer brands’ latest shows. For example, the Prada Fall 2021 Menswear collection featured a lot of boxy, oversized pieces as well as street style-inspired bomber jackets.
