6 Streetwear Outfit Tips That Will Level Up Your Style Game

Women’s streetwear is finally gaining traction in the fashion world and we are loving all the hype streetwear outfit is getting! However, most women still seem to be uncomfortable with the idea of streetwear, which is pretty ironic since streetwear revolves around the concept of comfort.

If you are one of the numerous women who wants to get in on the streetwear trend but don’t know where to start- sit back & relax. We have a guide that will introduce you to what streetwear is and the best outfit tips so you can look and feel your best!

What is Streetwear?

In 2021, that term is divided and argued about as often as fashion itself. Sensitive subjects surrounding 'streetwear,' such as gentrification, white-washing, plagiarism, and what is 'urban?' are valid and vital conversations. We must recognise the connection between fashions throughout the times and the historical and cultural context.

However, leaving debates aside, streetwear is commonly defined as a casual style of dressing popular among youths. This fashion sub-culture derives influence from hip-hop and skater style. Although streetwear rose from these humble beginnings, it is now a multi-billion dollar industry and has a major impact on the fashion world and its trends.

Even popular brands that are famous for their haute couture and tailored pieces are getting in on the streetwear trend. Similarly, streetwear designers are also gaining respect in the high fashion industry. Vigil Abloh, founder of the streetwear brand Off-White today holds the position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton Mens. Needless to say, streetwear currently has a stronghold on the fashion industry and there is no sign of slowing.

How Did Streetwear Start?

Some of the best art forms in the world originated from marginalised communities, and fashion is certainly no different. Streetwear can trace its origin all the way back to the 70s’ and 80s’ New York hip-hop scene and Californian skater and surfer scenes. But it wasn’t until Stussy opened his business that streetwear really started becoming the fashion movement that it is today.

In the 1980s, surfboard designer Shawn Stussy began selling printed T-shirts from his car. These t-shirts featured custom designs that he used on his surfboards. As his designs gained popularity, he eventually moved on to boutiques. However, his sales continued peaking. So, Stussy did the one thing he could do: create exclusive sales. This, in turn, created product scarcity in the market and increased the appeal of his t-shirts even more. This trend has continued till today and exclusivity is still the common element that ties all the streetwear brands together.

Today’s Streetwear Craze

Streetwear has moved on from being a specific sub-culture’s style and become mainstream in the past few years. We can even see its influence in top designer brands’ latest shows. For example, the Prada Fall 2021 Menswear collection featured a lot of boxy, oversized pieces as well as street style-inspired bomber jackets.

Best Streetwear Outfit Ideas and Tips

All streetwear outfit looks have common themes that give them that effortless and cool vibe. Here are our top tips on how you can get that look:

  1. Pay Attention to Your Shoes: Shoes are one of the most important elements of street style. Oversized sneakers are the most frequently worn shoe and they can make or break your outfit. Luckily for women, streetwear has no place for sky-high heels so you can stay stylish and comfy at the same time!
  2. Be Comfortable: Streetwear clothing revolves around casual and athletic clothes. So, basketball shorts, bike shorts, joggers, sweatpants, sweatshirt, and cargo pants are all popular choices. Remember, streetwear came from the skating culture, so if you can’t easily move in your outfit, it is not streetwear.
  3. Pick masculine silhouettes: Women’s streetwear is not currently at a place where we need it to be. Luckily, streetwear favours boxier, masculine silhouettes. Say no to tight dresses and skinny jeans that you can barely bend down in. Go for looser jackets, men’s blazers, and oversized T-shirts and hoodies.
  4. Don’t be afraid of layering: If you want to add your personal style to a streetwear outfit, layering is the key. Play with patterns, textures, and colours to get the perfect street-ready look. Arm sleeves are a great way to do this as they add a certain flair to your look without taking anything away from it. We have collection of armwear in various designs that can help set you apart from a crowd of other hypebeasts.
  5. Go for a looser fit: Don’t be afraid to play with proportions. We know the standard style rule: highlight your best assets and take attention away from your less-flattering features. But that’s where the beauty of streetwear lies. Streetwear is about your comfort and the too-cool-for-you attitude. Sweatshirts are a common staple in streetwear fashion and so are baggy cargo pants. Look to Billie Eilish for inspiration and let your clothes do the talking.
  6. Be yourself: Streetwear originated from counter-culture and the DIY fashion phenomenon. Its true essence lies in being yourself and mixing clothes that you like, regardless of what others think about it. Thrift Shop, be creative, and let who you really are shine. Who knows? You might become the next streetwear style star!
